Grace won the Playstation 3 for
her completion of the online version of the ISAAC study. The
ISAAC study (International Study of Asthma and Allergens
in Children) was completed in almost 40 schools around
Ireland in March, with over 3000 students taking part.
This
important survey on the increasing levels of asthma
and allergies was carried out to estimate the current
levels of these conditions in Ireland. This is part of
an ongoing series of surveys carried out on behalf of
the Asthma Society of Ireland, following an international
protocol.
Thanks to the previous ISAAC studies
the prevalence of asthma in Irish teenagers aged 13-14
years has been determined as 15.2% in 1995, 18.2% in
1998 and 21.6% in 2003*. The combination of data from
the questionnaire and laboratory data from samples taken
in the schools will
help us to build an up to date picture of the prevalence
of asthma in Irish schoolchildren. The results
of the ISAAC study are due to be released in the coming
months.
The second prize,
a Nintendo Wii, was won by Kristina Joksaite from St
Oliver's College in Drogheda, Co. Louth. Five
other runners up, who each won a €50 voucher from HMV,
were Conor O'Malley, Mercy Secondary School - County
Kerry ; Simon
Coulter, Ashton School- County Cork; Rebecca
Maher , Ard Scoil na nDeise - County Waterford, Dirmuid
O'Malley , Colaiste Mhuire - County Sligo and James
Murphy - Fingal Community College in
Swords.
