The ISAAC study has been completed
in 40 schools around Ireland
This important survey on the
increasing levels of asthma and allergies has been carried
out to estimate the current levels of these conditions
in Ireland. This is part of an ongoing series of surveys
carried out on behalf of the Asthma Society of Ireland,
following an international protocol (International Study
of Asthma and Allergies in Children). This project has
been funded in part by Dyson Ireland and in addition Dyson
have made their laboratory facilities in the UK available
to us to analyse dust samples in schools for possible allergens.
Thanks to the previous ISAAC studies
the prevalence of asthma in Irish teenagers aged 13-14
years has been determined as 15.2% in 1995, 18.2% in 1998
and 21.6% in 2003*. The combination of data from the questionnaire
and the laboratory data will help us to build an up to
date picture of the prevalence of asthma in Irish schoolchildren.
It will take some months to complete the analysis of the
